I had the great pleasure of meeting up with my old and dear friend ( with our wives to ensure our good behaviour) for lunch on Sunday at the Ivy in Manchester ( highly recommended).
Conversation turned to the Tierney controversy the previous day. My mate ( who is from St Helens and mainly likes Rugby League and Union and has played to a high level in both) straight away called it " scandalous ".
He had seen the highlights and read the reports and remarked that if something similar had happened in Rugby the ref would never have reffed at that level again. In League the VAR team would routinely advise the ref about errors virtually immediately. In Union, he reminded me of the case of a French ref called Paul Gaüzère who allowed two blatently bent try's for Wales against England, ignoring the advice of his officials. One was where he told Owen Farrell the England captain to have a word with his team about infringements. He called time off as Farrell got his team around him ( including water carriers ) in a huddle and passed on what the ref had said. He then nodded to the Welsh kicker Dan Biggar without warning to carry on, take a quick kick whilst England were still in a huddle, leading to a try.
He was demoted to linesman the next game and quietly retired the same year.
I can only imagine Tierney was distracted by the VAR check and forgot where play had stopped.

Konate went down after his goalie caught him, then stayed down holding his head until the ref blew, then got up
The new rule about head injury was to protect players, it's now being used by players against the refs
Basically konate cheated and he and Liverpool gained an advantage.

DTP I thought the ref was checking a foul on Yates I think from the corner when he was wrestled to the ground? According to MOTD the commentator said “ check complete for the penalty “ then the mistake over the restart? Who knows it was chaos at the end?

Thanks Stevie, I can only think the ref got distracted by that VAR check and gave the ball erroneously back to Liverpool. However, the was trying to give him the heads up on his mistake apparently but he ignored him. In which case that’s pure stubborn arrogance on top of incompetence. ?
DTP I watched it on catch up Monday morning which was the soonest I could bring myself to play it back without throwing something at the screen mate!

Stokey in retrospect it’s possibly he actually forgot who was in possession, because the Liverpool took the ball off Hudson odoi and kick i towards their goal after the whistle blew, no excuse though,
