Drink and drug problems are normally linked to post-traumatic stress or childhood abuse/ neglect of some kind. It is not just about life choices. Some people don't have a clue and should think before they speak/ type.

Agree2 Disagree0

Absolutely brilliant post cyclist young man. could not agree more. ?.

Cyclist, mate, I’m staggered by some of the comments on here about addiction. I’m reminded of the time when I a probationary Constable and I once made the mistake of expressing sympathy about a luckless soul in our custody to an Old School ( ex military) Sergeant. His reply was a shock and has always stuck with me.
He said ( and I quote) “Effing sympathy? Son get yourself a Dictionary and see where you find Sympathy. You’ll effing find it halfway between s?it and syphilis” ?.

Listen no one treats addiction lightly nor has there been any cheap remarks on here. By cyclists remarks I should be an alcoholic minimum. I’m not for the grace of God. My family through the years are riddled with alcoholism and dealing with the after math has been awful. Cloughie was an alcoholic full stop. That was his choice, problem was he always denied it, would never accept, the damage he did to himself and those around him, I’d better say allegedly here as it’s dodgy ground. We all loved cloughie despite this addiction but he knew what he was letting himself in for when he began that relationship with booze. I’m not being sanctimonious here but there is a large number of people who have nowhere else to go but the bottom of a whiskey bottle, people who cannot afford champneys and private councilling. Nor the luxury of restart run by ex footballers. Jeez the self discipline I have to use everyday to avoid being drawn by the drink. It’s my families demise that keeps me sober every day. So balloons was not flippant just honest and realistic. It’s not every bodies life choice but to some it is….

05 Dec 2023 17:45:29
Rutland there you go again alcoholism is not a choice,

05 Dec 2023 18:05:35
Rubbish, it does not take money to stop, it just takes that you care what you are doing to your self and to your family, should be enough!.

05 Dec 2023 18:13:35
You haven't got an understanding of addiction Rutland
It has nothing to do with weaith and Brian didn't come from a wealthy background, to say he made a choice to become an alcoholic is way off
No one starts out to become one, it's just that some people get consumed by it and can't then function without it
Same goes for drugs, smoking, shopping, hoarding lots of addiction that only professional help can try to alter.
To say clough made a choice to be one is nonsense.

05 Dec 2023 19:06:23
Spot on Rutters. Nobody holds you down and pours it down your throat, you choose to drink it.
Never heard such nonsense in all my life. ?.

05 Dec 2023 19:13:21
Unbelievable, clueless, ignorance.

05 Dec 2023 19:22:27
Some people are born stupid, too. Others are born to only see what they are brainwashed into. I guess we can't blame them for that, as it isn't their fault. ?.

05 Dec 2023 19:24:07
Red balloons solid 1950’s thinking.

05 Dec 2023 19:27:16
My take.
Addiction is either by choice or as a way to deviate from things going wrong in a life which are beyond a persons control.
I had an uncle who loved his alcohol and Was his choice.
His son ( my cousin) was the only son of 4 children.
Unfortunately for him he took his own life because of the choices of his father and the cruelty suffered from the hand of my Auntie.
My cousin was intelligent and a different person away from his home but the suffering he received made him turn to drug's.
I can see both sides to this argument.
The alcohol eventually took my uncle who lived to 75.
The point I'm trying to get across some people have a choice and some don't.
So please lay off Red.

05 Dec 2023 19:31:08
A perfect summing up rogie.

05 Dec 2023 19:35:17
I smoke 40 to 60 fags a day my choice I drink 6 to 9 pints a night my choice I've been told by docs to pack up because of my health I haven't my choice why because I bloody enjoy it to much and it's my desicion does that make me selfish damn right it does because anything happens to me my partner kids grandkids will be without a partner a parent and a grandparent so you tottaly do have a choice like you have a choice to have a opinion without being attacked for it get over yourselves from a great guy ?.

05 Dec 2023 19:40:50
I wonder if some of you read my post. At no point did I say clough was rich or that only rich people are alcoholic. The word addiction is over used as an excuse for being stupid. Sex addicts gambling addicts it’s all your choice, I mean ugly poor men don’t get an addiction to sex, do they? An ex family member is dying from addiction he loves it and says he wouldn’t change a thing. His words I would rather die than give it up. He can afford his addiction, i couldnt. Addiction is an over used word. Craving more like. Cloughie loved his drinking it was part of who he was.

05 Dec 2023 19:52:56
Dtp to say I haven’t got an understanding of addiction is way out of line. You did not read my post. From friends and family over the last ten years I’ve witnessed the devastation of alcoholism, most recently lost my youngest brother. Before anyone become consumed and can’t live without it, it was their choice to over indulge and benefit from the effects. It’s part greed and carelessness. We’re always told you can’t tell an alcoholic or a smoker to quit it’s got to come from them. Yeah right how does that work then?

05 Dec 2023 19:56:44
Alot of professional science and doctors are all wrong then Rutland and balloons?
Really?
It's simple, give em a slap and tell them to sort themselves out?
Next you'll be saying there's no such thing as depression.

05 Dec 2023 20:05:38
Can anyone else remember the kids cartoon called Captain Caveman? Alf Garnett was a classic as well. ??.

05 Dec 2023 20:05:54
Rutland I think that’s the most ridiculous irresponsible post I’ve seen on this site, closely followed by the one above, it,

05 Dec 2023 20:12:26
Its like the new tag line these days Rutters "Mental Health". Like Ronnie O'sullivan said it all nonsense and if its true he was 20yrs ahead of his time. Bless him now there is a genius. ?.

05 Dec 2023 21:16:50
DTP pontificating yet again.
Anything to get a point across
As Rutland states he has experienced addiction.
At times you have to take your head out your arse and breath fresh air!
Time to move on nothing to see here!

05 Dec 2023 21:32:10
Trump so Rutland is the only one who has experienced addiction in his family, ? So now what he says is gospel, he is talking absolutely irresponsible rubbish,

05 Dec 2023 21:38:41
Great post Rutland followed by a great post trump.

05 Dec 2023 21:52:37
"By cyclists remarks I should be an alcoholic minimum. I’m not for the grace of God. "

Sometimes trauma doesn't lead to addiction. Sometimes smoking doesn't lead to cancer. Does smoking cause cancer?

Think before you type this nonsense!

05 Dec 2023 21:57:57
No he hasn't at all fawaz
It's not in the genes and passed on, it's a teal life problem that I've seen first hand in various forms.
You just don't understand addiction.

05 Dec 2023 22:07:36
We don't understand cooper is great and we don't understand addiction because we have a different opinion to you about it dtp give it a rest.

05 Dec 2023 22:31:40
Skegs you must have a few fags to smoke, because judging by your posts you’ve already had your 8 or 9 pints for the day,

05 Dec 2023 22:52:03
I'm on my 6th pint of kronenburg stevie I've done my quoto of fags for today mate but probably manage 2 or 3 more are you a little bit jealous or are you worried about me mate because I'm a poor soul with lots of addictions as you call them ? it's good to have you back on the site mate I've missed our banter ?.

05 Dec 2023 23:35:16
