Don't like this term 'holding' midfielder. Conjures up visions of a player who can't run and freezes when he gets anywhere near the 18 yard box! We don't want anymore of these, please!

RedHot mate, we probably wouldn’t have won 2 European Cups without our “holding “ midfielder and captain John McGovern. Guess the term means different things to different people.

I read John McGoverns autobiography “From Bowles’s to the Bernabau, My Story”. He was apparently a long distance running Champion with incredible stamina despite his disability ( he was born with a muscle missing in his back, hence the distinctive jolting crab like running style). So he was a very mobile box to box type of holding midfielder who pre dated the likes of Kante and Rice.
