I think it was E. M. Forster who described our anthem as “a curt series of demands upon Jehovah”. I personally find it unattractive and would prefer “Jerusalem”, with the words by our great poet William Blake and the music by Hubert Parry. Sums up the English, a nation of warrior poets.

Good call Bse. I love the music of Gustav Holst. Like my favourite composer, his friend Sir Raith Vaughan Williams, he scoured England collecting ancient English folk songs and tunes, adapting and recording them for all eternity. The words are very stirring but subtle, pledging love for country but also God, as befits an Edwardian English gentleman!
