One of my favourite paintings of all time is " The Night Watch " by Rembrandt painted in 1624. If anybody on here goes to Amsterdam please go to see it ( and loads of other iconic paintings ) in the Rijksmuseum. It's enormous, covers an entire wall and it's the noisest painting you will ever see comrades.
In it the drums are being beaten, trumpets blown, dogs barking, men shouting, some singing, some sober, some drunk. In the middle of the chaos Captain Bennick Coqr the Commander of the militia ( and the man who paid Rembrandt to paint it).
It struck me that thus is really a portrait of our great club under the force of nature that is Marinkinakos. Boisterous, loud, controversial, and full of bravado, ready to fight and upset the establishment and a hell of a lot of laughs along the way.
Dutch ( and Forests) Golden Age period 4 ( after the triumphs of Billy Walker, Johnny Carey, Brian Clough and now Nuno and the big Greek!

Stokey - on our visit to Paris a few months ago, Mrs Legless and I were invited by the security team at the Louvre to stand right next to the Mona Lisa for pics. What an experience!

I’m very envious of your experience at the Louvre Legless. When I and my first wife stayed in Paris many years ago we joined the queue at the Louvre and “ saw” the Mona Lisa”. I say “ saw” because we got about one minute and saw it through a crowd of bobbing heads with the reflections on the bullet proof glass further obscuring it. It’s tiny isn’t it?
Although painted by a genius I think it’s a much over hyped painting. I much prefer the Pre Raphaelites, particularly the early “Brotherhood” of Holman Hunt, Millais and the Rossettis. I can never quite overcome my awe at seeing mythical fantasy subjects painted in such realistic detail, like a photo. They spent days getting the details right even if it was divorced from reality like the trappings on a knights horse. Amazing! And you don’t usually have to fight your way through a massive crowd to see them.
I love a Holbein portrait or a Caravaggio……and don’t even get me started on Monet…….

If you want to see world class painting. Skegs front door is an amazing example of pre Raffle night and a Stella effort and don't get me started on his Moet windows ??.

Skegs and Carlo, nothing wrong with Mabo. My Dad ( by the sweat of his brow ) saved up and bought a caravan at Trusthorpe. As kids and teenagers we spent some great times there. Then, a feckless Nottm City Tory Councillor called Bill Derbyshire retired to Skegness and became a local Councillor there. Virtually the first thing he did was put a tax on caravan owners to spite a hard working man like my Dad his rewards. He had to sell it and to this day I’ve had a visceral hatred of the Tories…….
As for DH, he travelled the world ( he called it his “savage pilgrimage “) including Sri Lanka, Mexico, the USA and most of Europe. I’m sure he never forgot Mabo or Eastwood ( “the country of my heart”). I have a visit to Vance in south east France planned as a pilgrimage to DHLs burial place there.
