Very good post Stokey, which sums things up quite nicely, However, for once I'm going to disagree with you my friend.

Personally, I feel that neither incidents were penalties. If you zoom in to the replay on theirs, Murillo's eyes were on the ball not the man. He was just clumsy. OK there was contact, but should clumsiness, with no bad intent, be a penalty?

As for our penalty claim - no way I'm afraid. Very minimal contact and a borderline dive.

If theirs was given as a penalty, then so should ours. Consistency is what we all want. In my opinion neither of them warranted a penalty. But if the VAR gives one then he should give the other. However, the VAR is a bin dipper.

Forget decisions we weren't set up to win.

I hear what you're saying about consistency Polly. However, our shout was absolutely nothing if you watch it back. The argument of consistency is only valid if both incidents were the same. In this case, unfortunately, they weren't.

Mate, I’ve been watching and playing football since I was a kid. I’m no longer sure what you have to do to get a penalty is these days to be honest.

It takes a brave ref to be called to the monitor and decide to overturn what he sees. As Polly rightly says, it’s very arbitrary whether VAR intervenes. We got a few seconds in a fast-paced game. They got 7 minutes and numerous replays.

It’s consistency we want. I think the standards of using VAR improved drastically during the Euros when it was overwhelmingly brisk and efficient. This rubbed off on our officials back home but after a bright start it sunk back into the abyss again.

I do get that, Legless. There was less contact on Elanga than there was on the Fulham lad but contact nonetheless. I thought they were 'raising the bar' for contact not lowering it. Maybe it was the theatrics by Elanga that caused the ref and VAR not to give it.
