Whilst it's quiet atm I was mulling over Steve Coopers ideas about encouraging his players to use their initiative on the field in stark contrast to CH a rigid drilling and repressive defensive set up.
I am struck by how the great successful military commanders throughout history have encouraged SC s approach, realising that all detailed plans get scrapped once the action starts. It then devolves to junior commanders showing flexibility in the heat of battle, within some general guidelines.
One thinks of Nelson telling his Officers " No captain can do wrong who lays his ship alongside an enemy" ( knowing that at close quarters superior British seamanship and gunnery would prove decisive)
Likewise both Wellington and Napoleon told junior commanders if in doubt then March to wardsthe sound of the guns.
Montgomery at Alamein told his troops to engage in days or even weeks of "hard pounding" knowing that the Germans had supply problems and would eventually run out of fuel and ammunition ( as he had carefully stockpiled and ignored Churchill's urging s to get into battle with Rommel quickly) .
Also I like SC s ideas of keeping it simple and not overloading his players ( who equate to junior commanders) with information. As the great American Civil War commander Bedford Forrest said tactics in war amount to just " Get there fastest with the mostest". Like Spences goal against Brum we broke and had more attackers in their box than they had defenders.
As usual the last word lies with Cloughie. " It's not tactics that you matches it's having good players ".
Hope you haven't all nodded off! Thoughts?

Nice post stokey 👍.

Confidence is a big factor, Cooper builds his players up. Not the opposition, the change is remarkable. I hope this togetherness continues with the players and coach.

Yep good post stokeyred l like the way you look at football tactics and management being similar to battlefield tactics. sounds like you could have some military experience in the past or was it just the police force for you, my uncle was also a police officer in Nottinghamshire.
I suppose to work in the police force you have to be tactically aware like yourself……great post 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿✌️
I always thought Brian Clough could become a great general and commander, like he was for Forest.

StokeyRed, what inspiration did Charles use against the Dutch in 1667 in the Thames estuary at Medway, it would have to have some speech to lift the lads from that.

Good one stokey as you wouldn't want to be in the trenches with hughton commanding.
Sit still lads, they won't break our defences.

Many thanks for all your kind comments fellow Reds. I have no military background but am a voracious book reader and will read anything but am particularly interested in history and the battles that change history. I have dragged both my wives and family around many battlefields such as Waterloo, Flodden, Normandy and Verdun and we did have a holiday booked to Savannah and Charleston, part of which was to have a tour of the Great American Civil Wat sites but the c.v. put paid to that .!
1951 Charles pep talk would have been difficult as he was to blame in spaffiing the country’s taxes on his mistresses and royal life style rather than bolstering the Chatham defences. The Dutch even towed away the our flagship! Talk about taking the p@@! . It was a bit unsporting of the Dutch as we were in a truce and having peace talks at the time.
Forester, I don’t know if your Uncles and my paths crossed mate. I served from 1979 to 2009 and worked Bulwell, Hucknall, Hyson Green, Broxtowe and the City Centre and finished up as a Custody Sgt at the Bridewell next to the Magistrates Courts.
