Well the status of the current first team squad is:-
GK - Horvath, Samba, Smith
RB - Tutu, Gabriel
LB - None (if you include Bong in Bomb squad)
CB - Worrall, Figs, McKenna, Mbe Soh
DM - Garner, yates, Colback, Cafu
RW -Lolley, Zikernagel
AM - Johnson, Carvalho
LW - Da Costa, Mighten
STR - Grabban, Taylor
In my opinion, we could have any manager and they would not be able to turn that squad into a promotion challenging side. It needs a complete overhaul from top to bottom.
I think we are ok in goal and centre back. Every other position the player challenging for the match day shirt are either short of experience, too poor to make the team or don't appear to care. This is truly the weakest squad I have known in 40 years supporting the club but I bet it is not the lowest wage bill.
This transfer window has been shockingly poor for us and most teams. Unless we get 6 good (stellar! ) signings by next Tuesday we will remain in the bottom 3 to 5 teams until Jan. And perhaps by then it will be too late.
Poor poor leadership at the club.
I have supported CH and the owners in the past but now that is gone. And unfortunately my interest is also going. So sad for what has / is happening to the club.

I've seen plenty of worst aquas at forest in my 50 odd years like the platt one the freedman one the matt gillies one and I could go on.
If hughton tried playing 442 or 433 he'd get a better return, but the man hasn't got another plan other than 4231 if you can actually call it that.

For me your first mistake was your saying turning the squad into a challenging side.
If we were wanting them to challenge for promotion that went out of the window once the club decided give Hughton another chance instead of sacking him towards the end of last season.
Another mistake is your saying a complete overhaul being needed, we need to stick with the best of the young players we have and bring some, not loads of players with the necessary requirements that the team needs for the next 5,6,or even 7 transfer windows.
We have to be patient and hope to the club goes about building the squad properly not complete overhauls hoping all the players fit the bill and gel this season, or next season.
I hope Horvath gets to play over Samba against Derby as i think he earned it against a strong Wolves side.
In that list we have some players with potential, and some good attacking players if only they were allowed more freedom to do so.
We have good basis we just need to be sensible and build gradually.
