Just read the excellent "Inverting the Pyramid" by Jonathan Wilson, a book on the history of football tactics. Recommended. Cloughie and the Reds get a good mention alongside the other great teams and innovative managers. One of the crucial innovations of fairly recent times is "the attacking back four " whereby a ball playing centre back (Soh and Mckenna? ) step up into midfield in possession thereby obviating the need for 2 holding midfielders. That would leave only one and allow 2 up top. Might make us a bit less ponderous in counter attacking, plus quick fullbacks (Christie Ribeiro) bombing on. Thoughts? (Plus both centre backs are 6 ft 2 and good in the air and strong so will address the ridiculous number of set piece goals conceded . Or am I imbuing too much intelligence to our manager and player recruiters? Thoughts?

Perhaps Sabri read it last month.

Worrall is 6ft4 and Figs is 6ft2 so wouldn't read to much into their height. No good being tall if you leave your man unmarked or let him brush you aside like your not there.

What did Brian Clough once say, it is not tactics that lose you games, it is players.

When a team are drilled enough and know their roles inside and out, and they have decent skills they will do well.

The hard part starts now turning 11 new players into a team, won't be an easy task.

I've just read an excellent book too by Sabri Lamouchi. It's about a football manager who lives on his own in Nottingham on the highest floor of a block of flats it's called
One up top 😎🎈.

Brilliant post Fred, appetitive and desire is what was missing Saturday . I suspect some stupid zonal marking system too.

Red Fred, good post but it’s the “strong” bit we need rather than just the height. Ad u say I can’t imagine Mckenna and Soh being rag dolled by big centre forwards like Figueiredo and Worrell have been by the likes of Smith of Millway and Moore’s on Saturday.
